One hundred years ago, childbirth in the U.S. happened mostly at home. Today, a sizable majority of childbirths take place in a hospital, excepting for the "baby is coming" Uber birth.
That transition from home to hospital has been a major driver of vast improvements in childhood mortality.
On the latest episode of the Science Vs podcast, from Gimlet, host Wendy Zukerman returns from her short hiatus for a new episode on childbirth. After her personal experience with the birth of her first child, Wendy explores the medicalization of the childbirth industry and asks the question -- is the medical community getting it wrong?
Childbirth seems to be getting more and more medicalized, with
C-sections and other interventions out the wazoo. But childbirth isn’t a
disease! So is all this medical meddling really necessary, or are
doctors too trigger-happy with the scalpel?
In today’s new episode, Wendy has an intimate conversation with Science Vs editor Blythe Terrell about her experience with a C-section, and sits down with doula Shala Konomi, Sarah Osmundson, an OB and associate professor at Vanderbilt University, and Dr. Crystal Berry-Roberts, an OB GYN in Texas, to explore whether doctors are meddling more than they should be in the realm of childbirth and - when push comes to shove -- is all this medical meddling really necessary?
This season -- its 11th -- on Science Vs, the podcast delves beyond its award-winning coverage of the coronavirus to delve into a variety of compelling new topics ranging from the misconceptions and fads behind weight loss, studies into shorter work weeks, whether we are inching closer to bringing dinosaurs back, and much more.
