ESPN Announces its video podcasts are now TV Shows???
When is a video podcast a podcast? Or is it a TV show? That blurry line between video podcasts or video shows, including TV, just got hazier with ESPN's most recent announcement.
ESPN has announced "a new, seasonal content initiative that will expand the reach of its ESPN podcast offerings." Hyperbole aside, ESPN2 began televising an ESPN video podcast every weekday from 2-3 p.m. ET.
The podcast / TV lineup will include: First Draft, The Hoop Collective, The Lowe Post, The Mina Kimes Show and The Elle Duncan Show.
Mike Foss, ESPN Senior Vice President, Production said: “This strategic content initiative provides our ESPN podcasts with a tremendous opportunity for continued growth and audience expansion, while simultaneously lending compelling content to our ESPN2 television lineup. The opening slate of podcasts combine timely, in-season sports – First Draft, The Hoop Collective and The Lowe Post – and high-profile ESPN personalities such as Mina Kimes and Elle Duncan.”
So, when is a video podcast a podcast, or when is it a video or show on TV?

Earbuds Podcast Collective Latest Recommendations -- Fiction that pushes genre boundaries
Every week, Arielle Nissenblatt distributes the EarBuds Podcast Collective recommendations by topic. Five podcasts are recommended according to a theme, and they are curated by a different person.
This week, the recommendation curator is Anderson Cook.
Cook chose this theme because, "Despite an infusion of Hollywood talent in the last few years, fiction podcasts are still the undersung younger sibling of the nonfiction podcasts that dominate the space. Many listeners aren’t quite sure what fiction podcasts are, how to listen to them, or what to call them (audio dramas? Scripted podcasts? New-timey radio plays?)"
Cook continues: "There are some really innovative and engaging titles out there from
indie creators and big studios alike. And while many fiction podcasts
take after the most popular nonfiction podcast genres (horror, sci-fi,
mystery, investigative journalism, found footage, etc.), I love the
shows that burst out of the conventions of what a podcast can be, and
venture into bold new genre territory."
Cook's fiction recommendations include Dirty Diana, where Demi Moore stars as a dissatisfied finance professional turned softcore audio pornographer, and the structure of the show is as ingenious as the plotting and characters.
Dark Woods is an eco-thriller about the ravages of capitalism, set in a national park. This could easily turn into a huge lecture, but instead, this show makes you forget about the didactic stuff with really compelling characters and extremely clever, twisty plotting. The show features great acting and writing, and it’s pulpy yet substantive.
