Some successful podcasts focus exclusively on just one element – such as Song Exploder, which details how songs are birthed and recorded and Problem Solvers about business lessons experienced from entrepreneurs.
Other podcasts build success through a jigsaw puzzle approach, adding just the right piece in just the right place to make a perfectly constructed whole.
The Sole Chronicles employs the latter strategy, mixing marketing savvy, celebrity gossip, personal journeys, friendship and the challenges of being African-American in the U.S., all tied together by
sneakers.
Hosted by Nekeda Newell-Hall and Muhammida El Muhajir, the podcast began in mid-July and has released five episodes as of mid-August. It is the interplay of the hosts that adds spice and seasoning to the podcast. Both women, successful in their fields with extensive marketing experience, have worked together several times. First, they worked together at the William Morris Agency (now WME), then Nike and Global Brand Marketing. They have collaborated on projects that ranged from Gatorade to Motorola.
The first episode -- called How We Got In! – details the workplace and personal connections that weaved the two hosts together through various jobs and assignments. Both women have impressive work resumes that span the gamut from intern to consultant.
It’s clear from their positions from Nike to WME that both women possess innate talents for marketing, organization and planning.
The preceding episodes all knit together the personal experiences, observations and opinions of Newell-Hall and El Muhajir with working with sports and entertainment celebrities.
Episode two deals with Michael Jordan, who both hosts found charming and playful. Jay Z, Snoop Dogg and Eminem are major players in the next three episodes and their interactions with these celebrities makes for lively podcast episodes.
As hosts, Newell-Hall and El Muhajir excel with crispness to their voices and a narrative flow that seems more like a steady flow than a torrent of words. What makes the podcast worth a listen is the ability of the hosts to move with ease from marketing strategies to personal challenges.
