The Spotify/Gimlet “Crime Show,” dives into the deep end of the true-crime pool with a different stroke every episode. For example, recent episodes include a woman who discovered that her singing was stolen, and it wasn't even a crime. Or a town in Minnesota where Judy Garland was born, and a big crime shakes up the town.
In the next two episodes, Crime Show explores the rise and fall of the Southeast London MMA fighter Lee Murray, who pulled off one of the biggest bank heists ever.
The stories explored in “Crime Show” are true, and the topic is crime, but the series is really about people – the survivors, victims, perpetrators – in their own words, telling their crime stories and the impact they’ve had on their lives.
It's this focus on the people drawn into the orbit of crime that makes this podcast so much more than a just a true-crime podcast.
In the episode launching June 15, regular host Emma Courtland passes the mic to fellow producer Matthew Nelson to share Murray’s unbelievable story. Listeners will hear from former MMA fighters Drew McFedries, Pat Miletich, Jason Reinhardt and more, as they discuss the legacy of Lee Murray and the high-stakes crime that led to his downfall.
In between Lee’s training as a rising MMA fighter, he maintained a double life chained to the streets of London, but was adamant about ensuring it never interfered with his fighting. When his questionable second life catches up to him, Lee’s worlds collide and his future as an MMA fighter is brought to a halt - ultimately leaving him in prison in Morocco.
So what really happened to Lee Murray? And what does former UFC fighter and MAGA Huntington Beach mayor - now resigned - Tito Ortiz have to do with his story? This week’s new two-part episode of Crime Show goes to the mat to uncover the details.
