Intelligence Squared U.S. Podcast Debates Booster Shots and Vaccine Issues

There is a podcast that scrupulously follows a formal debate format and offers listeners an intellectually vibrant and fact-based discussion on critical topics in our society.

Intelligence Squared podcast

The Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates podcast is funded and produced by a non-partisan, non-profit organization, Intelligence Squared U.S., which was founded in 2006 to address a fundamental problem in America: the extreme polarization of our nation and our politics. Their mission is to restore critical thinking, facts, reason, and civility to American public discourse. The award-winning debate series reaches millions of viewers and listeners through multi-platform distribution, including radio, live streaming, podcasts, interactive digital content, and on-demand apps on Roku and Apple TV.

With well over 200 debates and counting, Intelligence Squared U.S. has encouraged the public to "think twice" on a wide range of provocative topics. Author and ABC News correspondent John Donvan has moderated IQ2US since 2008.

The boosters are rolling out. In places like the U.S., Britain, and Israel, authorities are providing additional COVID-19 vaccines with the goal of bolstering immune systems and shoring up their economies. Yet a debate about fairness, when much of the planet is still unvaccinated, is growing.

In the new episode of debate podcast Intelligence Squared U.S., host John Donvan sits with Dr. Vin Gupta, Pulmonologist and Professor of Health Metrics Sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and Leana Wen, former Baltimore health commissioner, CNN medical analyst, and Washington Post contributing columnist, for a debate on the question "Are booster shots unethical?" Gupta says yes. Wen says no.

This episode continues IQ2's series of vaccine debates, following episodes on patent protections, vaccine passports, and whether employers and schools can require vaccines.

Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates acts as a counter-measure to the lack of a shared reality that damages unity, collaboration and a sense of compromise. Too often, where some see a deadly pandemic that has killed nearly 135,000 Americans and hospitalized three times that number, others see a hoax perpetrated by an unholy alliance of Bill Gates, Satanists, socialists and Chinese scientists.

Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates is a podcast that doesn’t take sides in political dogfights. Instead, the podcast uses facts, logic, reason, emotional intelligence and a shared vision to urge listeners to question, validate, contemplate, reflect and even see differing points of view.

If you’re a podcast fan, read Ear Worthy, a book for podcast fans about podcasts and podcasting. The book assists aspirational podcasters with tips and tools on developing, starting, and maintaining your podcast. In Part Two, the book discusses trends and comments on industry developments. For example, Why Podcasts Prove that Timing Is Everything? Podcasts attract “ears” because they’ve dived headfirst into the morass of timely topics, from racial justice to the pandemic.

Or How Have Podcasts Changed In The Last Decade? Podcasts are longer. They are obsessed with true crime and have outgrown the reformatted radio show template.

Part Three eavesdrops on influential podcasters as they reveal their thoughts on their podcasts, podcasting, and the creative scaffolding they’ve constructed for their successful podcasts.

You’ll hear from Wendi Zuckerman from Science Vs, and her take on the assault on science by some politicians and news networks. Journalist Áine Cain and lawyer Kevin Greenlee will guide us through the horror of murders at a Burger King and other retail locations on their podcast The Murder Sheet. Finally, we’ve assembled a sampling of podcast reviews that offer an attribute that makes them valuable to podcasting as a medium and to the listeners.
