Every time we think that the future of work is set in granite or at least, stamped concrete, we discover we're wrong. Cubicle farms forever? Wrong? Open office plan? So wrong. WeWork-type of temporary work stations? Pleeease!
The introduction of a global pandemic turned remote work -- a heretofore minor subsection of the work environment -- into a necessary adaptation to no work at all due to the lockdown.
More changes to our workspace and to the philosophy of work loom.
Vox Media has taken up the mantle of "the shape of work going forward" into Vox Audio’s latest series, “The Future of Work.”
In collaboration with Today, Explained, Recode Daily, The Weeds, and Vox Conversations, Vox podcasts’ teamed up together to form an eight-episode series about the American workplace. From labor shortages to remote work, these shows will explore the recent, dramatic changes in the workplace, and whether these adjustments are permanent going forward.
Vox's flagship daily news podcast, Today, Explained, hosted by Sean Rameswaram, will kick off the eight-episode series today with special guest Rani Molla, senior data reporter at Recode, and discuss labor shortages, labor trends such as why certain industries are struggling to hire more than others, and how the pandemic has led to “The Great Resignation.”
Additional episodes from Today, Explained include conversations about: the gig economy, with The Verge editor and reporter Josh Dzieza, the future of remote work, and a deep dive into rethinking our work-life balance. Recode Daily will publish two episodes about how technology is changing the future of work, and The Weeds will cover how remote work can reshape America's cities.
Vox Conversations will wrap up the series on November 29th with a discussion about Anne Helen Peterson and Charles Warzel's new book "Out of Office."
New episodes will drop every Friday, beginning today on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you get your podcasts.
For podcast fans, this Vox initiative demonstrates how media networks like Vox can leverage its podcast network and its talent to develop a limited-run but hyper-focused series on important topics that elude the mainstream media.
Consider that, while Vox investigates the future of work, radio talk show hosts continue their assault on self-perpetrated culture wars. TV "news" networks fill up their 24-7 news cycle with endless panel discussions that serve more as political propaganda pieces than informational events.
