Episode Three Of National Geographic's "Into The Depths": Slave Trade In Costa Rica

National Geographic has dropped the 3rd episode of “Into The Depths,” which is a poignant six-part audio series that follows Tara Roberts, a National Geographic Explorer and Storyteller, who follows a team of Black divers on a quest to document and identify sunken slave shipwrecks. You can find full information at: natgeo.com/intothedepths.

This riveting new podcast begins as Roberts sets off on a journey of a lifetime with divers and marine archeologists, descendants of shipwrecks and historians investigating the lost stories of the slave trade—both to expand the historical record and to honor the estimated 1.8 million unsung souls who perished during the Middle Passage.

In episode 3, we see Tara Roberts fall (back) in love with a small town in Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo, which is home to a community that still feels the effects of the slave trade. In this community, young people clamor to uncover their own history and, of course, a shipwreck.

Also discussed is the racism and systemic inaccessibility that permeates the field of archeology, and the importance of centering communities in the writing of their own history.
