The Latest Episode Of National Geographic's "Into The Depths" Podcast: Slave Ships & Shipwrecks

National Geographic dropped the finale episode of Into The Depths, which is a poignant six-part audio series that follows host Tara Roberts, a National Geographic Explorer and Storyteller, who follows a team of Black divers on a quest to document and identify sunken slave shipwrecks.

This riveting podcast began as Roberts set off on a journey of a lifetime with divers and marine archeologists, descendants of shipwrecks and historians investigating the lost stories of the slave trade—both to expand the historical record and to honor the estimated 1.8 million unsung souls who perished during the Middle Passage.

In the finale episode of INTO THE DEPTHS, Tara Roberts returns to her roots in North Carolina, searching for a grounding force. She finds it in Africatown near Mobile, Alabama, a town populated by the direct descendants of stolen Africans that came to the United States on the Clotilda. Here, we hear the stories of those descendants and their families, and Roberts gets in touch with her roots. The series wraps with Roberts finding a certain belonging that she could have never imagined before

In previous episodes, Tara Roberts headed to Africa to walk the path her ancestors may also have, hundreds of years prior.

I highly recommend this podcast series. I learned much more about the millions of Africans who were captured and shipped to America and into the lifelong shackles of slavery. The even more tragic part of the narrative is those who died during the journey from Africa to America, either due to disease, starvation, mistreatment, or a shipwreck.
