Memoirs are tough sledding. Emotions pour out, spill over, and splash around. It’s like the relief valve has been opened, and now the overflow has to be organized for others. That's what Black Girl Songbook podcast host Danyel Smith had to go through when crafting her new memoir.
Spotify has just released the most recent episode of its Music + Talk show from The Ringer, Black Girl Songbook, hosted by author, journalist, and former Vibe editor-in-chief Danyel Smith.
This new episode, Chapter 30, discusses Danyel Smith’s recently launched book, Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop, and includes in-depth interviews with fellow Spotify host Jemele Hill and Elliott Wilson, founder/CEO of Rap Radar and none other than Danyel’s husband.
Through the conversation with Jemele Hill, Danyel spoke with the host of Spotify’s Jemele Hill Is Unbothered about the announcement and organization of her new memoir, confronting her emotions when writing the memoir, suppressing her emotions to survive and more.
During Danyel’s conversation with Elliott Wilson, the two journalists and spouses spoke in-depth about the process behind creating Danyel’s book, how the book led to the creation of Black Girl Songbook and more.
