More Than a Feeling: A New Podcast About the Science Of Emotions

As podcast networks have grown and expanded, they've taken on distinct characteristics. You have the "kitchen sink" networks like Spotify, iHeart and Cumulus that pump out podcasts like eggs on a chicken farm.

Then you have the networks that unite their podcasts via a sensibility -- smart, reflective, academic -- like Freakonomics, NPR, Slate and Vox.

Then you have the networks that define their brand by content. The TED network is a good example, with its roving eye for intellectual curiosities.

Another example is Dan Harris's mind and mediation podcast Ten Percent Happier that is expanding its content and brand by launching a new podcast, More Than A Feeling.

More Than A Feeling, launched April 19th, explores the stories and science behind everyday emotions. Host Saleem Reshamwala talks with neuroscientists, philosophers, musicians, therapists, hairdressers, pilots, and more to shed light on our relationship to our own emotions, and the emotions of others.

In More Than A Feeling, host Saleem Reshamwala goes on a real life quest to find the answers to fundamental questions about emotions. Most of us have gotten at least a little emotional at some point recently. It’s natural. But why do we have emotions, and how much should we pay attention to them on any given day? Can we learn to skillfully choose which emotions to listen to and which ones to just let move on by?

Reshamwala will experiment with neuroscientists, dive into stories with historians and philosophers, and document how musicians, therapists, hairdressers and airplane pilots work with emotions.

Saleem
Reshamwala sifts through the human condition to find stories and insights that will help us define our most fundamental relationships: our relationship to our own emotions, and to each other’s.

In the first episode, "Prologue: What's More Than a Feeling?"

Reshamwala asks a basic question: "What are emotions?"

For background, Ten Percent Happier has evolved from a solution for one, to a book, to a multi-channel meditation business. With the help of Jen Poyant, former Executive Producer at WNYC Studios and co-founder of Stable Genius Productions, and Kimmie Regler, former Senior Producer of New Show Development at Gimlet Media, More Than a Feeling is the latest launch in the brand’s development of a wide and diverse range of shows for the Ten Percent Happier audience.

I think the podcast is a natural extension of its overall brand. In our polarized nation, we need a much better understanding of our emotions and how can they can blind us to our confirmation bias.

And I need answers to how I feel emotionally when:

  • Spotify announces a podcast and then never follows through
  • Or when, another true-crime podcast is announced to add to the 10,000 already out there investigating the same crimes.
  • Or out-of-work celebrities start a podcast in their solarium and interview their extended family and the maintenance staff.

Clearly, I need Saleem Reshamwala and More Than a Feeling.

More Than a Feeling is available on all podcast players and on Amazon Music and Wondery+ as a part of the brand’s newest distribution deal.
