Twenty Thousand Hertz Earns Two Nominations for 2022 Webby Awards

What do awards mean to podcast listeners? Quite simply, they mean that the people who have expertise in a media industry recognize talent, innovation, and a commitment to excellence.

This week, Twenty Thousand Hertz earned two nominations for the 26th Annual Webby Awards. As the series' fifth and sixth Webby nods, the latest set of honors for Business (Individual Episode) plus TV & Film (Individual Episode) once again prove the podcast and host Dallas Taylor's breadth of talent in telling the surprising, inspiring stories behind the world's most recognizable and interesting sounds. Twenty Thousand Hertz previously won the 2020 Webby Award and People's Voice for Best Science & Education Episode ("Birdsong"), following a 2019 victory for Best Original Music/Sound Design.

"I'm Lovin' It," the episode that unravels the wild saga behind the infamous McDonald's jingle, is up for the award in Business — the first time Twenty Thousand Hertz has been recognized in the category. The nomination follows recent features by Marketplace and NPR's Planet Money, where host Dallas Taylor explored the strategy behind sonic branding.

The "I'm Lovin' It" jingle is arguably the most successful sonic marketing story of all time. Alongside the original "I'm Lovin' It" composers, Tom Batoy and Franco Tortora, Taylor reveals that the tumultuous months it took to bring those five iconic notes to the masses required 3,700 different audio mixes, celebrity controversy, a Trojan horse pop single, and so much more. The episode was also named one of the Best Podcast Episodes of 2021 by Spotify: LISTEN

"20th Century Fox," the story of how the Hollywood studio's fanfare became one of the most recognizable pieces of music in the world, is up for a podcast award in the Television & Film category. Through interviews with film historian Aubrey Solomon and composer/conductor David Newman (son of the fanfare's original composer, the legendary Alfred Newman), the episode traces the creation and evolution of this emblematic theme: LISTEN
