The New Unpacked Podcast: Travel With A Social Conscience

Travel podcasts can be tremendously helpful when we are trying to organize a vacation. Rental homes, tourist attractions, places to avoid, when to go, when not to go, flight deals, promo codes, and much more.

The inherent beauty of podcasts is that they can take a mundane and well-covered topic and then put a special twist on it. Suddenly, your expectations are blown to pieces.

Saving the world via travel for the next generation.

That's what's going on with a new travel podcast called Unpacked.

Produced by AFAR magazine and set to launch on June 9, Unpacked offers clear, thoughtful tools for travelers who want to make a positive impact on the world. In effect, AFAR has produced a travel podcast for travelers who want to make the world just a little bit better.

You can listen to the trailer here.

Listen to the Unpacked creators: "Have you ever been traveling and encountered a situation where you felt a little . . . uncomfortable? Yeah, us too. Each week on Unpacked by AFAR, we'll unpack a single, ethically complex question. Say, 'How can I travel with a lighter footprint?' or 'How can I engage with animals in an ethical way while on the road?' Through a mix of first-person stories and interviews with experts in the field, Unpacked will explore not just answers to those questions, but new ways to engage with the places we visit and the people we meet. Because the world is complicated. Being an ethical traveler doesn't have to be."

In each episode of Unpacked, a different host will unpack a single, ethically complex question like “How can I travel with a lighter footprint?” or “How can I engage with animals in an ethical way while on the road?” Through a mix of personal narrative—bringing his or her own experience to the conversation—and interviews with experts in the field, our host will explore not just answers to those questions, but new ways to engage with the places we visit and the people we meet.

Lineup:

  • There Is No “Travel Like a Local.” How Embracing Our Differences Helps Us Empathize More (Hosted by Esteban Gast of Comedians Conquering Climate Change)

  • Let’s Scale Back That Revenge Travel (Hosted by Paige McClanahan, of The Thoughtful Traveler)

  • What Is Zero-Waste Travel—and Is it an Impossible Dream? (Hosted by Kristy Drutman of Brown Girl Green)

Check out Unpacked on June 9. Your conscience will thank you. Just think, when friends and family ask you about your latest vacation, rather than say how much money you saved on a deal, you can tell them how much you did to save a small part of the world.

Bravo!
