The world is awash in misinformation, dollar stores, and podcasts. Misinformation you can get anywhere, especially your Uncle Kevin, who has more conspiracy theories than doctor appointments. Dollar stores sound more attractive in a world of seven percent inflation, and everyone seemingly has a podcast now.
With so many podcasts floating around battling for "ear time," why would you need recommendations? The answer is deceptively simple. Precisely because there are so many podcasts. Think of podcast like bread. In the ancient times (the 20th century) you would go to the supermarket and there used to be two basic choices -- white bread and white bread. Now, there's whole wheat, multi-grain, carraway seed, gluten-free, and endless varieties of food that used to be good for us and now is the devil incarnate to keto advocates.
My point here is that too much choice isn't good for us. It causes stress, indecision, buyer's regret, and our evil inside voice that revels in our bad decisions.
There are too many podcasts. Worse, there are so many good podcasts. You only have so much time. You could wear your Air Pods while your husband is regaling you with his latest golf round highlights, but it could damage his already Humpty Dumpty ego.
So what do you do?
You find a third party to provide you with podcast recommendations. True to my observations above in this piece, today, I will provide you with one. There are many good landing spots for podcast recommendations. Let's start today with one that exemplifies the spirit of the entrepreneurial podcaster. A company that with a dream, a mission, and a plan.
This podcast recommendation company is EarBuds Podcast Collective.
Here's their story in their own words:
"Founder Arielle Nissenblatt was stuck in traffic one day in Los Angeles and realized that podcasts were helping her through the commute. Though she loved her five favorite podcasts, she wanted more. She asked friends to share their favorites, and their friends to share their favorites. Quickly, the movement grew. Now, we send a weekly email with a theme and five podcasts on that theme -- each week curated by a different person -- to thousands around the world.
Anyone can curate a list! We pride ourselves on sending the newsletter every single Sunday night. That’s a lot of podcast content! If you’re just getting into podcasts or you’re a long-time audio lover, there is absolutely a list for you to explore. Find our podcast recommendations and archive here."
EarBuds Podcast Collective has a lot going for it. It's a fully functional website, has an advertising arm, its own podcast, holds live events about podcasting, and, most of all, excels at podcast recommendations.
Since I've already admitted that several podcasting organizations offer listeners excellent podcast recommendations, why did I start with EarBuds Podcast Collective?
First, they have an extensive, six-year archives of podcast recommendations. The recommendations are organized by year and then by topic. They are easily searchable.
Second, many podcast recommendation destinations tend to offer listeners podcasts by a strict category regimen. You, know, best technology podcasts, best movie podcasts, best politics podcasts, best true-crime podcasts. It's all very Apple-centric category-driven.
EarBuds Podcast Collective explodes the category system listeners have become comfortable with due to Apple's podcast section of iTunes.
