The internet is a scary place for concerned Parents. Children on the web are always one click away from hate, misinformation, porn, or scams.
The decentralized and deregulated nature of the internet also means danger for children who search for content designed for them. Even a Google search for kids podcasts can return unwanted results.
Sound Carrot is a website that tries to solve that issue. In essence, it creates a fenced off website where all the content is kid-friendly and lists an extensive choice of children-friendly and family-oriented podcasts.
Sound Carrot is, in effect, a safe space, where children can find dozens of podcasts geared to them without intrusions from ads, external links, or inappropriate material.
Here is the introductory statement from the founder of Sound Carrot: "I’m making this site primarily for my kids. Over the last year they’ve gained a huge love of podcasts through shows like Finn Caspian, Becoming Mother Nature, Story Pirates and more. They’ve grown environmentally conscious through Earth Rangers and Animal Sound Safari. And their critical thinking is coming on leaps and bounds thanks to the Big Fib. Chompers, well that’s just all around fun for toothbrush time."
"As we’ve discovered new shows our podcast app has gotten busy, but it’s me that tends to have to find new things to listen to because, well, there’s just so much content out there and the kid specific stuff gets lost in amongst everything else. We’ve used google, but that’s a whole world of getting sidetracked and just not as easy (or as much fun) as being let loose in a walled garden to discover something themselves."
"That’s what I’m hoping to build here at Sound Carrot, a place where it’s quick for parents to find quality content and somewhere easy for kids to browse shows that are safe for them to listen to."
Here are a few examples of podcasts on Sound Carrot:
TruthDiggers
School friends Morgana and Alfie are looking into a notorious cold case: the mysterious disappearance of local eccentric Odd Colin from their Lancashire town in 1972. As Morgana and Alfie doggedly pursue their investigation they’ll encounter pirates, vampires, aliens and secret agents, and interrogate them all in order to get to the truth!
Earth Rangers
I’m a wildlife biologist and roaming reporter for the Earth Rangers podcast, the brand-new show for everyone who loves to explore the mysteries of nature. Come with me as I explore the deep jungle, the frozen Arctic and splash around some wetlands, all in the name of science!
Animal Sound Safari
Animal Sound Safari takes your ears around the world to explore the weird and wacky histories we humans have with animals. Led by our safari guide Lawrence with help from his brainy animal expert Laura, you’ll make awesome new friends – both human and animal.

To help parents choose content appropriate for their child, each podcast lists keywords related to the topic. Let's look at one specific example.

Check it out. I listened to the Brains On podcast -- where a different kid co-host joins Molly Bloom to find answers to fascinating questions about the world -- and thoroughly enjoyed it. And I'm not the target demographic!
