Meghan Trainor Guests On The Comment Section With Drew Afualo

I like Drew Afualo. She's smart, courageous, and she has balls.

“Women have constantly been expected to be the bigger person — to give patience, kindness, and grace to men in the face of disrespect,” Afualo told Rolling Stone last year, adding: “I’m a woman of color; I’m also not a thin woman. All these different facets of bigotry play into the way people react negatively to my content.”

She’ll likely never run out of nasty comments to shut down, but the silver lining is that the platform on which she does so is only getting bigger. “Men have been unchecked for hundreds of thousands of fucking years,” Afualo once said in a TikTok takedown. “And now, there’s a new sheriff in town, bitch.”

The comment section is the trash heap of the most vile human emotions. It takes a strong stomach, an iron will, and a "take no prisoners" attitude. Drew Afualo has all three.

The Comment Section, her popular internet culture-based podcast, moved exclusively to Spotify on April 5. Unlike other social media stars who struggle with the longer format of a podcast, Afualo has thrived.

On the podcast, Afualo and her guests comb through their war zone comment sections together while discussing the themes of racism, misogyny, and bigotry that arise.

In this week’s new episode of the hit video podcast, The Comment Section with Drew Afualo, is joined by singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor as they discuss what it takes to be a mother, Meghan’s new book Dear Future Mama, the behind-the-scenes of Drew's cameo in Meghan's "Made You Look" music video, sibling relationships, and ultimately dive into the comment section.

Below are some highlights around Drew and Meghan’s conversation:

24:32 - 25:23: Meghan tells Drew that she helped inspire her song, “Mother.”

Meghan Trainor: “You actually were a big part of inspiring ‘Mother,’ the song…because when I was explaining the concept to people, ‘cause my straight brothers were like ugh, this sounds annoying. And I was like, exactly, it’s supposed to make you upset. It’s like all the people, you know how you and everyone is like, who gave these men a microphone, why do they have a podcast, why do they have a voice, and why are they so loud? That was also my target with this song…stop all that mansplaining.”

Drew Afualo: “That was Meghan Trainor giving me credit for her greatest body of work, which is clearly her song.”
Meghan: “You were a part of it. I was like you know what Drew does. That, in a song.”

54:21 - 55:22: Meghan gives her advice for future mamas.
Drew: “What would you say is your best piece of advice for soon-to-be mamas or people who want to be a mother one day?”

Meghan: “You’re doing the best you can and that’s the best, you know. Try to be easy on yourself. You know how you’re hard on yourself in general in life, always and forever, whether it’s loving yourself or loving your career or where you’re at. When you’re a mama, it’s all that as well times a million because you’re, like, mom guilt. As soon as you go back to work, you’re like, he’ll never know who I am. But it’s not true. It will pass, and he will be obsessed with you…We’re all human, and we’re all doing the best we can and the fact that you’ve made life is a win, and that you’re here doing the best you can, you slay. There’s no wrong way to do it.”
