What do you want first? The good news or the bad news? The good news is that NYT Audio's Modern Love podcast has returned and is now weekly. The first episode features actor extraordinaire Gillian Anderson. Also, in the good news category, actor Liev Schreiber narrates a new five-part docuseries called The Deserter.

New York Times Audio to begin a subscription service
The bad news? New York Times Audio is yet another corporation to hide content behind a paywall. At least, I gave the NYT credit for not doing the + thing. You know, Disney Plus. Wondery Plus. It's like the Plus connotes that you are receiving an extra product or services. In reality, you're now paying for something that was free.

The Deserter narrated by Liev Schreiber debuts
He
didn't want to fight in Putin’s war — he just wanted to survive. But to
make it back to his family and live in peace, he would have to run.
In The Deserter, journalist Sarah A. Topol
reports the story of a soldier who served as a captain in the Russian
army, fought in Ukraine and then ultimately fled the war and his
country. Topol spoke to 18
deserters while reporting in eight countries across four continents over
the last year and a half; their experiences helped inform a vivid
picture of the Russian war operation and its corruption, chaos and
brutality.
It
is a love story, a thrilling tale of escape and a disturbing account of
the war. It’s also a revealing portrait of how Vladimir Putin’s
decision to invade Ukraine has ricocheted through the private lives of
Russia’s citizens, and the desperate choices some of them have made to
survive.

Modern Love podcast now weekly
The Modern Love podcast now returns as a weekly show, bringing listeners new episodes each Wednesday without breaks in between seasons.
Hosted by Anna Martin
and based on the weekly New York Times column, the show explores the
complicated love lives of real people through conversation and
storytelling.
In the most recent episode, actor Gillian Anderson
(“The X-Files,” “The Fall,” “Sex Education”) joins the show to read and
discuss the Modern Love essay “On Tinder, Off Sex,” which follows a
woman who becomes unintentionally celibate after a painful breakup.
The
author fantasizes about past and potential loves but can’t seem to
break out of what her doctor has called “secondary abstinence.” Anderson recounts a time she felt similarly, and how a good yoga
practice snapped her out of it.

NOTE: Despite my distaste for podcast subscription services, New York Times Audio does provide compelling content that is exhaustively researched and thoughtfully presented. I recommend all of their shows.
