Numbers are relative. In the movie business, box office receipts for popular films can reach a billion, as seen in the recent Minecraft Movie. Last year, more than 1,000 U.S.-based companies grossed over $1 billion.
In podcasting, however, a billion is not a numerical value tossed around with any regularity, until now. That's because iHeartMedia and The Black Effect Podcast Network are celebrating The Breakfast Club podcast surpassing one billion downloads, joining a very short list of podcasts to reach this impressive milestone.
“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who’s tuned in, supported, and helped make this milestone possible,” said DJ Envy. “A billion views is more than just a number — it’s a testament to the culture, the conversations, and the community we’ve built together. Thank you for riding with The Breakfast Club!”
The Breakfast Club – The World's Most Dangerous Morning Radio Show – launched in 2010 on iHeartMedia New York’s Power 105.1 and quickly became a must-stop destination for musicians, entertainers, politicians, and the most talked-about cultural figures of the moment. Since then, it has amassed a dedicated following captivated by the honest opinions and cultural breakdowns from current hosts DJ Envy, Jess Hilarious and Charlamagne Tha God. Esteemed guests who have appeared on the show include former President Barack Obama, former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Jay-Z, Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart, Snoop Dogg, Future, 50 Cent, Lizzo, Will Smith, Alicia Keys, and many more.
“A billion-plus downloads of The Breakfast Club podcast is proof that radio continues to evolve,” said Charlamagne Tha God. "The Breakfast Club started on the radio, but we grew by meeting our audience wherever they are: not just on podcasts, YouTube, and social media but in real life, having real conversations. Whether we're talking hip hop, politics, or mental health, we've never been afraid to embrace the real issues that matter to the Black Community and America as a whole. Gratitude to our listeners!"
In August 2013, The Breakfast Club became a nationally syndicated morning radio show syndicated by Premiere Networks on more than 100 stations nationwide, including markets such as Houston, Atlanta, Miami, and Detroit; and also launched as a hit replay show on iHeartPodcasts. The Radio Hall of Famers also host Weekends with The Breakfast Club, a three-hour weekly program featuring a countdown of the top 20 hits of the week.
“Reaching this incredible milestone is the direct result of the unique personal connection Charlamagne, Envy, and Jess have with their dedicated listeners, who know they’ll always get the realest of real when they tune in,” said Thea Mitchem, Executive Vice President of Programming for iHeartMedia. “This show is a cultural force that has captivated audiences for nearly 15 years, and it’s only getting bigger and bolder.”
In 2020, The Breakfast Club replay podcast served as the flagship show for the launch of The Black Effect Podcast Network, co-founded by iHeartMedia and Charlamagne Tha God. The network is the leading platform for Black creators to raise their voices and be heard in the podcast space. It brings together the most influential and trusted voices in Black culture for stimulating conversations around social justice, pop culture, sports, mental health, news, comedy, and more. Curated by Charlamagne Tha God himself, The Black Effect has debuted 40+ shows since its launch. It features a luminous roster of marquee talent and culture-shifting voices committed to enlightening, educating, and entertaining audiences.
