Dagon Podcast: Lovecraft, Horror, and the Paranormal

I began listening to the I Is For Investigate: Dagon audio fiction podcast in October 2024 with season two of their story based on an HP Lovecraft tale. The story combines H P Lovecraft's short story Dagon with elements of The Shadow over Innsmouth and is adapted by Michelle Perry-Brooker with assistance by Tobias Nilsson, Neil Brooker, and Matthew Sielewicz-Stanhope. The show is billed as a weekly Fiction, Drama and Horror podcast, and it doesn't disappoint in any of those genres.

The season ran in 11 episodes from October until early February 2025, and I was sorry to see it end.

The show is produced by indie podcasters Michelle Perry-Brooker and Neil Brooker via Destination Yesterday Productions.

The Brookers create an entire ecosystem from which their stories spring. It's an immersive and utterly engrossing experience.

Let's begin by introducing you to the podcasters in their roles. "Welcome to 'I is for Investigate'. We're a team of paranormal experts, investigative journalists and psychic investigators who, in conjunction with law enforcement specialists, look into cases which are considered 'special' due to details which are out of the ordinary.

"When the various policing forces run up against a brick wall and mark a case as 'dead', that is usually the beginning for us. We work with top government agencies and each of our employees undergo rigorous security checks on a regular basis."

"Cases which were once deemed sensitive, are being declassified by various governments. Presenting our work to the public seemed appropriate in the current environment, since many people have come forward with amazing stories in the wake of podcasts and series which deal with 'otherworldly' themes. The stigma which used to be attached to this area is lessening rapidly, and this makes it easier for our investigative team when they are working 'in the field'."

The ten episodes of season two are a master stroke of audio fiction, with carefully curated background sounds, authentic accents, and a mind-being story that can simultaneously frighten, intrigue, and engross.

These creators have been releasing audio fiction since January 2024 with their first season, The Shambler From The Stars, which was a five-part series that run until March 2024, at which point Dagon begins.

Since then, the team has been busy. In March, they began The Dagon Epilogues, which ran until late June 2025. Then, the team released The Quarterman Explanation, which was based on The Temple by HP Lovecraft.

If you are searching for quality audio fiction, especially in the horror and paranormal genres, and you're a fan of HP Lovecraft, don't miss Dagon. Wherever you jump into the show, you'll enter a dystopian world that combines horror, the paranormal, true-crime, fiction, and Holmesian investigative techniques.

The voice acting is first-rate, and the lushness of the sound imbeds listeners into their world.

Let me end with a quote from their I is For Investigate team.

"There are some people who believe that being a skeptic keeps them safe in today's world. But at 'I is for Investigate,' we believe that if mankind always strives to not believe what our senses and instincts tell us, then we run the danger of ignoring possible truths. We become dehumanized when over-used scientific axioms hold full sway, encouraging us all to be skeptics, always providing the same set of reasons to explain phenomena. It is just as bad as the other way around: Believing everything."
