Believe? The Myths & Conspiracies Pod is a comedy-driven podcast hosted by comedians Phil Green and David Ferguson, dedicated to exploring the world's most bizarre myths, mysteries, and conspiracy theories.
Each episode features a fellow comedian guest who picks a conspiracy theory or myth for the hosts to explore. The hosts and guests try to make sense of the topic by looking at its origins, facts, and fiction, aiming to prove or debunk it, though they often do neither, as the focus is on humor and banter.
Topics covered include everything from QAnon and Project Bluebeam to "The Glitter Conspiracy" and the theory that Garth Brooks is a serial killer. The show aims to blend lighthearted comedy with the investigation of strange, often-debated subjects, offering an entertaining take on conspiracy culture.
Conspiracy theories are modern society's method for making sense of either their plight in the world, or an affirmation of their core beliefs. Your candidate didn't win an election? It's stolen, obviously.
The media reports facts and news that don't square with your political leanings? It's fake and produced by pizza-eating pedophiles, obviously.
In late March, the show was nominated for a Golden Lobe award.
The Golden Lobes are UK-based comedy podcast awards, launched to celebrate excellence in comedy audio, ranging from solo creators to global platforms. They feature various categories, including a "Best International Show" for non-UK productions.
I recommend the episode with comedian Steve Hall to discuss the theory of the secret space program. One of my favorite episodes is with comedian Caroline McEvoy where they explore the mystery around the missing people and murders in cities when Garth Brooks is in town. If that wild theory isn't enough, other important topics covered are ghosts vs aliens, and the Coldplay cheating scandal.
For "out there" immersion, there's an episode with comedian Jin Hao Li to discuss whether the world as we know it ended in 2012, and we now live in a new timeline. Even though the old timeline was no great shakes, I'll go back to it any day.
Phil Green is an award-winning stand-up comedian, writer, and podcaster known for his personal, high-energy comedy. He has sold out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and London's Soho Theatre.
Stand-up: His notable shows include "'90s Boy: Blair, the Lovegun & Me" (2022) and "Four Weddings and a Breakdown" (2023). He has also written for BBC Radio 4's Newsjack.
David Ferguson is a stand-up comedian and writer based in the UK. He often discusses personal experiences, including growing up in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. He has performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Camden Fringe, with shows focusing on observational and dark comedy.
Check out Believe?. The show combines smart, snarky humor with the craziness of those who fall prey to these conspiracy theories.
