I must give props to Katie Thompson for the most innovative, outlandish, snarky, on-point podcast title I've ever heard of. The title isn't just a humorous line; it also encompasses the thematic principle of the show.
I Shaved My Vag For This is an educational, humorous, and candid podcast hosted by writer/producer Katie Thompson that tackles women's health, wellness, and the complexities of female anatomy, motherhood, and identity. It features interviews with physicians and researchers to provide real science, aiming to empower listeners by discussing topics often left unsaid.
It covers topics like pelvic floor health, fertility, menopause, UTIs, and vaginal health, often with expert guests.
The tone of the show is refreshingly all over the place. It's one of the show's endearing qualities. The show blends serious scientific information with humor, storytelling, and honest discussions about womanhood, including topics like identity, trauma bonding, and mental well-being.
Host Katie Thompson produces the show, which has been recognized as a Webby Awards nominee for its candid approach to these topics often refers to its community as "SMV University," focusing on educating listeners about their health in an accessible way.
On Kate Thompson's website, her ABOUT section reads: "She’s best known for addressing the taboo topics and unspoken truths that exist between people and creating dialogue that bridges all perspectives together— grounded by real science and data.
She is committed to creating environments where all people and demographics can learn from the best and brightest in their field, with conversation led by the stories and experiences of real women. Her work showcases both discourse and fun; education and entertainment, science and comedy— without losing respect for learning and becoming more empowered when it comes to our health."
A prime example of her shows includes the January 28th episode Why Do I Keep Getting UTI's? Thompson says: "Roughly 60% of women will experience a UTI at least once in their lifetime. 40% will experience a recurrence within the next 6 months. For some of us, it's our most loyal and consistent relationship we never asked for. But why are women so prone to UTI's? Why can't we enjoy a fun night without worrying about peeing papercuts? What happens when we pee, shower, and cranberry our way to peace of mind, but the infection still finds us? Is this final destination? Genetics? ...... the consequences of last night's vodka and lukewarm pizza?"
Here's a clip of the show:
Like many of her episodes, Thompson excels at addressing serious topics through the lens of humor and snark. Yet her wit does not diminish the topics but only enhances them.
Another example is the April 29th show -- How Do I Know What I Like? Science of Good S*x with Dr. Emily Jamea Slam Dunk Level Intimacy. Every. Single. Time.
Katie Thompson sits down with Dr. Emily Jamea for an unfiltered conversation about today's decline in sex, the biases that keep us from talking about our desires, and the five secrets to unlocking full-blown flow state in the bedroom.
Thompson says: "You’ve seen an athlete “in the zone.” You’ve watched a musician lose themselves mid-song. But have you ever thought about what flow state looks like during intimacy? Turns out the same neurochemistry that fuels peak performance on the court can fuel peak connection under the sheets. Hear how intimacy takes shape in short and long-term relationships, why getting to know your own body and sexual desires is the prerequisite before finding flow and intimacy, and learn exactly how to communicate what you want and when you want it, no matter how big the swing."
The YouTube version of the show is not just a video version of the podcast. On YouTube, Thompson vamps for the camera, and tosses out her trademark snarkiness with a smirk, a smile, and a wink.
I highly recommend I Shaved My Vag For This. The show deals with serious issues related to women's health and lifestyle, while enabling Katie Thompson to inject her trademark humor, observational ripostes, and delicious banter into it.
