BadLands:Hollywoodland Podcast Latest Episode: Size Does Matter

John Holmes unexpectedly found fame in the 1970s with a freakishly large appendage that proved a gateway into the burgeoning adult entertainment industry. He appeared in over 2,000 porn films and alleged to have slept with over 14,000 women, making basketball great Wilt Chamberlain look like a monk in comparison. 

But a severe drug habit put him in close contact with some strange bedfellows in the Los Angeles underworld, including a ragtag gang of junkies and dealers, and Eddie Nash, a dangerous criminal mastermind. Drugs, desperation, and double-crossing would eventually lead to the infamous murders at 8763 Wonderland Avenue on July 1, 1981.

That's a summary of the latest episode of “Badlands:HOLLYWOODLAND,” a spinoff of popular music podcast, Disgraceland, that details stories of some of Hollywood’s most legendary stars in a blend of hardcore history, true crime, and transgressive fiction.

In the John Holmes’ episode, released on June 2 on all major podcast platforms, host Jake Brennan tells the story of Holmes" start in the adult film industry and how he got caught up with the wrong crowd, eventually leading him to play a significant role in the 1981 Wonderland Murders that left four dead in Los Angeles. From his early club life to stealing TV’s and running with Eddie Nash, Brennan covers it all. 


Previous episodes covered the tragic death of actor River Phoenix at 23 from drugs, and the legal woes of actor Fatty Arbuckle. One of Hollywood’s greatest scandals involved underground brothels, studio hush money, bootlegged alcohol, a dead actress, and the most famous silent-era star you’ve never heard of: Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle.

In 1919, already a household name, Arbuckle became the first actor to earn a million dollars a year, eclipsing even his friend and competitor, Charlie Chaplin. Just two years later, he had a reversal of fortune of epic proportions. Over 100 years later, however, few people know anything about Arbuckle’s fame or his infamous downfall.
