Here's another example of top talent from TV and movies moving into the podcasting space, with director Paul Feig and actor Alison Pill linked to this project. Moreover, audio fiction appears to be a comfortable format in podcasting for TV and film top talent. The recent growth of audio fiction illustrates surging listener demand for the format. Better scripts, high-profile talent, and improved production values have combined to bolster interest in audio fiction.
Echoverse, a podcast studio focusing on science fiction, supernatural, and fantasy audio experiences, today announced The Doctor Is In, a new project with DGA Award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated filmmaker Paul Feig and Emmy Award-winning producer Laura Fischer’s Powderkeg Media and Alison Pill (Hello Tomorrow!, Them, Devs, Star Trek: Picard).
Pill will produce and star in this series, created and written by Cassie Keet. Greg Lubin and Kesila Childers will produce on behalf of Powderkeg Media.
This darkly comedic supernatural drama features medical student-turned-veterinarian Dr. Kate Spencer (Alison Pill) who works the graveyard shift at an animal hospital in Chicago. When her late-night patients begin to shift from household pets to more exotic creatures like werewolves and vampires, Kate suddenly finds herself in the middle of a brewing underground war.
“The minute we read Cassie’s pilot script, we connected with her smart and irreverent main character. We’re excited to be able to showcase new voices like Cassie’s and to be partnering with Powderkeg and Alison Pill on this unique and unconventional approach to the traditional vampires-vs-werewolves story,” said Mark Stern, President of Echoverse.
“Laura, Kesila, Greg and I are thrilled to bring this unique and fun series to life with our friends at Echoverse,” said Powderkeg Media co-founder Feig. “Telling a story like Cassie’s in podcast form allows us unlimited creativity to explore and expand the boundaries of horror and fantasy, and we can’t imagine a more perfect person to front it all than Alison. We’re counting the days until the next full moon!”
Launched in 2018 by DGA Award winning and Emmy Award nominated filmmaker Paul Feig and Emmy Award winning producer Laura Fischer, Powderkeg Media champions new voices with a special commitment to female, LGBTQ creators, disabled, and filmmakers of color by developing scripted and unscripted formats across emerging and traditional platforms.
In 2021 Powderkeg launched Everything’s Fine on Snapchat, a coming of age comedy set in the pop punk music scene executive produced by Pete Wentz and the podcast Close to Death in collaboration with UCP|Audio. The original comedy format Q Talks is slated for Roku in 2022. Powderkeg is in development with series at Spotify and a feature at Paramount+.
Launched in May 2020 with Lloyd Braun’s company Whalerock Industries, Echoverse is a next-generation podcast studio that brings together top-tier talent from all disciplines to create premium science-fiction, supernatural and fantasy audio dramas.
