There are some famous people who make us regular folks either smile or grimace. Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Dr. Fauci, and Meghan Markle. Sometimes that's because these people manipulate the media (Musk, Trump) and other times because the media manipulates them (Fauci, Markle). Fauci got in the crosshairs of Fox News and conservative "science" pseudo-experts, and Markle seems to be suffering the same fate as Camilla Parker Bowles. Bowles isn't Princess Diana and Markle isn't Kate Middleton.
But the former actor handles the spotlight well and appears to be an ideal podcast host for an interview show. I've listened to the first episode and think she did an excellent job. Sorry, Markle haters. If you're upset, feel free to throw a Prince Louis-type tantrum.
The first episode of Spotify and Archewell Audio’s podcast series Archetypes with Meghan Markle has just debuted.
Archewell Audio is the audio-first production company started by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The first episode and trailer are available now, only on Spotify.
Spotify and Archewell audio promote the podcast this way: "In this season of Archetypes, listeners can hear from women across generations who conquered tropes in their lives to inspire a new generation. The series premiere episode features a conversation with Serena Williams as she discusses ambition, motherhood, and her evolution. Also joining Meghan to discuss ambition as it relates to gender is UC Berkeley Professor Laura Kray."
The podcast's mission is to "uncover the origin of these stereotypes and have honest conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape narratives, with the help of cultural commentators, historians, and contemporary thinkers."
Episode one is titled, "The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams." Markle
talks to tennis great Serena Williams about the double standard
women face when they are labeled "ambitious" and the ripple effect this
has on other aspects of their life, as well as how they are perceived.
Some notable moments from Markle's conversation with Serena Williams include:
14:50 - Meghan and Serena reflect on embracing ambition from a young age, including Meghan's letter-writing campaign to a soap manufacturer and Serena's iconic "I'd like other people to be like me" comment.
29:43 - Meghan and Serena share personal stories about balancing their ambition with their journeys into motherhood. They each open up about struggles they felt as new mothers with careers in the public eye.
43:16 - Meghan and Serena touch on the topic of being in control of their own narratives as Serena shares details about her evolution away from tennis and her experience writing her personal essay for Vogue.

Next week's episode will feature a conversation with Mariah Carey. I hope they talk about Carey's New Year's Rockin' Eve performance in 2016.
