The Athletic Announces New Football (Soccer) Podcasts

Sorry, I know you weren't expecting a pop quiz. Here goes.

What is the fastest growing team sport in the U.S. in terms of game attendance?

No, baseball has lost attendance and young fans in recent years. The NFL has made modest attendance gains. The answer is Major League Soccer (MLS). In fact, in March of this year, MLS set a record for one-game attendance in Charlotte, NC with a game against the LA Galaxy, when 74, 479 fans showed up. Take that Washington Commanders.

If you answered that question correctly, you'll be excited to know that The Athletic --  a subscription-based sports website that provides national and local coverage in 47 North American cities as well as the United Kingdom -- has announced an enhanced schedule for its football (soccer) podcasts.

Highlights of the offering include:
  • Mark Chapman, one of the biggest names in British broadcasting, will host The Athletic Football Podcast FOUR times a week.

  • The award-winning Totally Football Show is back with James Richardson and the team to cover English and European football every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

  • The Athletic’s biggest club shows are going twice a week. You can listen to Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Leeds United podcasts every Monday and Thursday, with weekly episodes for Manchester City and Newcastle.

  • The Athletic Women’s Football Podcast will build on their successful European Championship coverage with another full season of the Women’s Super League. And don’t forget about The Offside Rule either, back for more weekly episodes.

  • There are specialist shows too, from the joyous Football Cliches, twice-a-week with Adam Hurrey, to the always insightful Athletic Football Tactics Show with Michael Cox.

  • The Tifo Football Podcast returns, irreverent and beguiling as always, there’s a chance to improve the fortune of your fantasy team with The Athletic FPL podcast and the award-winning Football Manager Show returns with a new presenter for its third season.

In January, The New York Times purchased The Athletic and has breathed new life into the sports service.

According to Iain Macintosh, Managing Editor of The Athletic Audio, "This is going to be one of the most action packed football seasons in living memory; all of Europe’s top divisions and a World Cup stuffed in the middle! We’ll be there every step of the way with James Richardson, Mark Chapman and our incredible roster of presenters and experts, providing the most insightful, compelling and entertaining coverage out there."

James Richardson, host of the Totally Football Show, notes, There are an awful lot of football podcasts out there, and possibly a lot of awful football podcasts.  The good news though is that whatever part of the game you’re into - tactics, the women’s game, or just in depth coverage of the team you support, there’s a quality Athletic football podcast for you. I’m delighted to be hosting our fifth season of The Totally Football Show at The Athletic, and we can’t wait to get started!"
