Latest Episode Of "Archetypes" Podcast: Mindy Kaling Interview

Before I pass along information about the latest Archetypes episode with Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, I must say that people do have strong feelings about Markle. Sometimes positive, but more often negative. I can summarize the negative comments I've received this way. First, Markle travels around the world talking about environmentalism, but air travel damages the environment. Second, Markle has so many clothes while she takes up causes for the underprivileged. That seems to make her a phony. Third, Markle is an ingrate for rejecting the nobility.

Yet, although Kate Middleton may have a more expansive wardrobe, travels the world to promote environmental causes, and has embraced the outdated notion of nobility, the Duchess of Cambridge seems immune to such criticism.

I am not Markle's defender, but I do sense disgust toward her that does not seem commensurate with her actions. Can something else be in play here?

Anyway, Spotify and Archewell Audio debuted the third episode of Archetypes with Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex featuring a conversation with writer, actress, and comedian Mindy Kaling. Opening up on her life as a single woman in the public eye, Kaling joins Markle for a discussion on motherhood as a solo parent, why she doesn’t feel the need to rush into a relationship, and how she overcomes the stigma of being a “singleton.”

The Archetypes podcast views its core mission as such: "The show will investigate the labels that try to hold women back. With the help of cultural commentators, historians, and contemporary thinkers, Archetypes will uncover the origin of these stereotypes and have honest conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape narratives."

Also joining the podcast for a history lesson on the power structure of traditional marriage and how it reflects on unmarried women today is New York Magazine columnist, Rebecca Traister.

Some notable moments from the episode include:

  • 10:38 - Meghan and Mindy connect on their childhood as “latchkey” kids, and how they would escape their loneliness through literature, sharing a love for Archie Comics and the innocent romance of its characters.
  • 14:09 - Mindy shares with Meghan her experiences with companionship, and how she was inspired to start a family on her own as a single mother.
  • 24:22 -Mindy opens up to Meghan about the stress she endured as she entered motherhood alone, wondering if her Indian family would accept her non-traditional approach to forming a family.

Next week's episode features a conversation with Margaret Cho and Lisa Ling.
