Spotify: Mic Check Podcast Connects With Australian Artist Sycco

I recently met a podcaster who told me that he loved Australian music, especially the 1981 hit, "Down Under" by Men At Work. When I asked what more current Australian music he enjoyed, he replied, "I don't know any other music than that song."

What a shame. Australia has been a hotbed of musical talent for decades, with artists such as Iggy Azalea, Olivia Newton-John, Kylie Minogue, Sia, and Keith Urban.

That's why the most recent episode of Spotify’s podcast Mic Check with Sycco (she/they), the rising 20-year-old First Nations Australian artist currently on tour with Tame Impala and Glass Animals, is so fascinating.

In case you aren’t already familiar, the psychedelic pop singer/songwriter and producer has already amassed tens of millions of streams, toured with Dua Lipa, and received recognition from key tastemakers like Billboard, Vogue Australia and many more.

Sycco spoke with Mic Check about their creative process, managing burnout, and how she utilizes music to express her sexuality as a queer artist.

Sycco on avoiding burnout:
On the podcast, Sycco shares how she experienced burnout while working to finish an album in three months. Now, the Brisbane-based artist establishes hours to create music, and spends her free time with friends or in nature to reset.

Sycco also discusses how music has allowed her to naturally express her sexuality. Earlier this year, Sycco was named as May’s Spotlight artist for GLOW, Spotify’s always-on global music program focused on LGBTQIA+ artists and culture, that launched earlier this year. As part of the program, she also released two Spotify Singles, including her original song “Ripple” and a cover of Post Malone’s “Rockstar.”

Sycco on covering Post Malone’s “Rockstar” for Spotify Singles:
“The reason I chose ‘Rockstar’ was because I was literally going through my Spotify playlist and I was like, that's perfect. And no one would expect that. I didn't expect it. Let's do it.”
