Is there a formula for a podcast to become popular? In the last two years, large companies like Amazon and Spotify have discovered that podcast listeners are a discerning group, and passing off "copycat podcasting" as quality has had some disastrous consequences.
There are elements that can improve the chances for podcasting success. Genre podcasts like true-crime, sports, and comedy tend to do well.
So it's no surprise then that iHeartPodcasts has announced the addition of “Playing Dirty: Sports Scandals” to The Dan Patrick Podcast Network.
Co-produced by Patrick, iHeartPodcasts, Workhouse Media, Never Ever Productions, Jenn Brown and Francey Hakes, the new podcast features stories from the dark side of sports - from passport doping and armed assault to car chases and sex scandals. Narrated by veteran ESPN personality Jay Harris and written by Emmy Award-winning sports broadcaster Jenn Brown and federal prosecutor Francey Hakes, “Playing Dirty” tackles a variety of complex and controversial
cases.
From the Marcus Dixon trial that incarcerated a black high school football stand-out sparking a national civil rights debate, to MMA star Cain Velasquez’s ongoing saga that confronts our justice system’s handling of vigilantism, “Playing Dirty” doesn’t shy away from difficult questions and insider details.
“Playing Dirty: Sports Scandals” launched on February 1, with new episodes available every Thursday on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard.
“It’s been a fascinating journey telling these stories and going deeper into the lives of some of the greatest athletes,” said host Jay Harris. “I was drawn to hosting this show because it really does bring a fresh perspective to the interplay between sports and society, and being a partner to my guy Dan Patrick is such an incredible opportunity.”
“I’ve been a fan of Jay Harris for a long time,” shared Dan Patrick. “I’m proud that he has decided to join my podcast network with this exciting new show. I know our fans will love it.”
“We love how multi-layered the true-crime stories in ‘Playing Dirty: Sports Scandals’ are, and I’m so proud of our team’s thoughtful execution,” added Never Ever Productions Co-Founder and CEO Maia Glikman. "Never Ever Productions was established to tell exceptional stories, and every behind-the-scenes sports tale explored in this podcast is deeply informative and engaging."
To me, the greatest sports scandal of all time don't actually involve athletes. How about paying $40 to park for a baseball game? $20 for a beer? A mini-baseball helmet with ice cream inside for a measly $19!
