It's no surprise, sadly, that drug overdose deaths rose from 2019 to 2022 with 107,941 drug overdose deaths reported in 2022. Deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone (primarily fentanyl) continued to rise, with 73,838 overdose deaths reported in 2022.
Clearly, for all the words written, documentaries filmed, podcasts recorded, songs played, and politicians promising action, there has been little progress in the war against drug overdose deaths and addiction.
I recommend the May 24, 2024, episode of Freakonomics Radio podcast -- Thinking differently about opioid addiction -- for a clear-eyed view of the addiction crisis in the U.S.
iHeartPodcasts and Mental
Health Expert Sean “Seano” McFarland have announced The Seano Show, a new
original series that will tackle addiction, trauma and the importance of
the healing journey. The show premiered on July 10. The series features in-depth discussions on trauma and addiction, and those who are
currently dealing with it and those who overcome it.
“My
hope with The Seano Show is that we will reach individuals battling
addiction and mental health that never considered a better way of life
or realized they even had a problem,” said McFarland. “Many of my guests
will be vulnerable and share intimate parts of their lives, in an
effort to grab the masses and let them know they’re not alone and there
is a light at the end of their tunnel.”
In episode one, McFarland sits down with bestselling author, motivational speaker and convicted felon Damon West. West will vividly recount his early success as a high school quarterback, his tragic fall into drug addiction and crime, and the daunting 65-year prison sentence he received. The two will discuss the profound impact of childhood trauma, the relentless battle with addiction, and the transformative advice to 'be a coffee bean' that sparked West’s remarkable recovery.
iHeart says: "Seano McFarland is one of the world’s most sought-after experts in addiction. He will bring his highly valuable wisdom that has been traditionally reserved for some of the most high-profile individuals to the masses, bringing a whole new meaning to the term agent of change."

I also recommend The Addicted Mind with Duane Osterlind.
The Addicted Mind Podcast offers hope, understanding, and guidance for those dealing with addiction, with real stories and research to inspire and show the journey to recovery is worth it.
The show looks at new treatment ideas, shares stories, and helps with understanding the complex world of addiction recovery and showing that recovery is possible.
