Five Best Travel Independent Podcasts

Travel is one of those podcast genres that offers a hint of specificity without the certainty of finding what you're looking for as a listener. For example, travel could encompass airline information, cruise reviews, tourist destination evaluations, travel tips, and budgeting advice.

In essence, Travel is a genre with many eddies and tributaries. Today, we will attempt to include some of the diversity of the Travel genre.

As evident in most genres, independent podcasts offer a wider range of quality podcasts than high-profile network-supported shows with massive advertising budgets.

 The Thoughtful Travel Podcast

The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, hosted by Amanda Kendle, is a show for travel enthusiasts who want to learn from the experiences of other travelers.

Each episode is packed with travel stories from fellow travel enthusiasts on topics such as using foreign languages, meeting the locals, getting lost, and what we learn from our travels.

The show has a decidedly low-key, mellow feel, and Kendle has a quiet, reassuring tone that approaches ASMR levels. What makes the show compelling is the stories told by travelers with Kendle as the narrative guide. For example, in a recent episode, listeners heard from
Chelsea Gruber, a big fan of solo travel who has had quite a few active adventures on her trips, and was in training to run the Paris Marathon. Then Kendle spoke to Patrick Nash, who spent time traveling through many parts of Africa, and his story centers on a long walk through the Congo, or what was then Zaire.

Finally, Kendle chatted with Amy Willis shares, who shares some of her active travels, starting off with her experience on the Rim to Rim at the Grand Canyon, and then describing a recent experience running in northern Kenya.

Always Be Booked

Get ready for a travel podcast that has a strong, "New Yawk," "You talkin' to me" vibe. Always Be Booked is an off-beat, irreverent look into all things related to cruising. Host Tommy Casabona offers brutally honest reviews, expert tips, industry news, and his unique perspective on cruising.

Casbaona is a character, but endearing and full of helpful cruise information. I like that he has a structure with Wild Wednesday Cruise Deals, Thursday Conversation, and Freestyle Friday episodes.

Here's a glimpse of his usual cruise topics: Carnival continues to be at odds with its passengers, Royal Caribbean goes back to its overbooking ways, Best cruise line to work for, for recent grads, and Adults only gambling cru.ises

 Airlines Confidential

Host Scott McCartney is a legend in podcasting, starting The Middle Seat podcast in the early days of the industry. Topics include Alaska/Hawaiian Airlines increasing Asian service from Seattle, Chris Sloan on the Pacific Island Hopper, United Airlines adding significant numbers of seats, Southwest Airlines expanding international service, United Airlines projecting a return to JFK airport, Southwest Bags Fly Free no longer available, and Newark airport caps traffic amid air-traffic controller issues.

The show interviews many airline execs and experts, and McCartney keenly keeps the topic on airline passenger concerns.

Scott McCartney has 40 years of experience as a national reporter at The Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal, as well as a contributor to television, radio programs, and podcasts.

It's his expertise, hosting, and communication skills that make the show so ear-worthy.

 This Week in Travel

This show features a weekly roundtable discussion on travel news and the travel industry, hosted by leading travel writers, bloggers, and podcasters. This Week in Travel is a (sometimes) weekly travel podcast hosted by Gary Arndt and Jen Leo.

Started in 2009, it is a three-time NATJA medalist for Best Podcast, and it deserves the recognition. Co-host Gary Ardnt is also the host of
Everything Everywhere Daily, one of the best informational podcasts in the industry. In about 10 minutes, listeners can learn something new every day on a variety of subjects, including history, science, geography, mathematics, and technology, as well as biographies of some of the world’s most fascinating individuals.

Ardnt and his co-host, Jen Leo, bring that same informational density to this travel show. It's a helpful podcast for those seeking information about traveling to various parts of the world.

Like most genres in podcasting, there is a rich assortment of travel podcasts from which listeners and travelers can choose. Be cautious of travel shows sponsored by cruise lines, airlines, and other travel-related companies.

When I think of being fortunate enough to travel, I'm reminded of a quote by French writer Gustave Flaubert, author of Madame Bovary, who once said, “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
