Bold Politics Podcast: Migration, Populism, Sustainability & The Future Of UK Politics

There's a young man on TikTok who travels with a camera and mic, and he asks people on the street easy questions about the United States. Sadly, so many "citizens" can't name their own state capital, Senator, or congressional district. It seems that Americans have more information about misinformation (vaccines cause autism, January 6th was a false flag op, Russia didn't interfere in our elections) than actual information.

There's a political party in the United Kingdom that is trying to use a podcast to get out their message and have offering in-depth conversations on the ideas shaping the future of the UK.

Zack Polanski, newly elected Leader of the Green Party, announced the launch of Bold Politics, a weekly podcast, last month.

Bold Politics is the first podcast hosted by a leader of a UK political party. It will be an "always on" format, recorded at Acast Studios, designed to connect directly with Zack’s supporters as well as politically engaged audiences. Each week, Zack sits down with leading thinkers, activists, and cultural figures to debate the big questions of politics, society, and culture.

Speaking on the launch, Zack Polanski said: "Are you bored of hearing about Nigel Farage? Me too. I’m sick of the media’s obsession with so-called right-wing populism. Populism is about the 99% versus the 1%—and those lot are literally the 1%. This podcast is for the 99%. I’ll be speaking to people I respect, and people I disagree with too. Bold Politics is about opening up space for those kinds of fearless, necessary conversations."

The new podcast features a range of guests, including those who Zack has looked to in the process of shaping his political identity, offering conversations full of insight, perspective and challenge. Down the line, Zack will speak to figures he disagrees with from across the political spectrum to have conversations that aren’t being had elsewhere. He will also use this platform to elevate stories from people whose voices have previously been unheard, as well as take questions from his supporters and critics.

In the first episode, The Future of Left Politics, Zack sits down with activist, commentator and author of Minority Rule, Ash Sarkar most prominently known for her work at Novara Media. They discuss: What can future left leaders learn from the Jeremy Corbyn era? How does Britain’s imperial history still shape foreign policy today? Does protesting really work?

Upcoming episodes also include:

Picking a Fight with the Far Right with Jolyon Rubinstein
BAFTA-winning writer and director Jolyon Rubinstein, creator of The Revolution Will Be Televised, sits down with Zack to discuss the complexity of experiencing anti-Semitism during a live-streamed genocide and how effective storytelling from future progressive leaders will be able to take on the far right.

How to Stop the Small Boats with Zoe Gardner
Migration expert and campaigner Zoe Gardner joins Zack for a deep dive into the truth behind “small boats.” Why don’t refugees stop in France? Does anyone actually want dangerous crossings? And could migration be the solution to Britain’s aging population?

Vulture Capitalism with Grace Blakeley
Economist and writer Grace Blakeley discusses her book and concept Vulture Capitalism, why she joined the Green Party and how she would like to build a more equitable society through economic policy.

The podcast will be produced by acclaimed podcast creator Ross Buchanan, who also works with Goalhanger on the chart topping economics podcast The Rest Is Money. Speaking on the launch, he says: “Nigel Farage has more TikTok followers than all other MP’s put together. This is a clear sign that the current suite of politicians does not have a grasp on new media and how to influence and reach potential supporters on the platforms they actually use. Zack Polanski is a brilliant communicator who I want to help engage with his supporters and grow his audience through the most intimate media form available, podcasting.”

Ross Buchanan is a leading British podcast producer, writer, and former broadcaster whose work has consistently redefined how complex ideas are communicated to mass audiences.

Ross is now spearheading an ambitious new frontier: helping key communicators and progressive content creators connect with their audience through the intimate and revenue-rich medium of podcasting. His collaboration with Zack Polanski - launching the first-ever podcast by a UK political leader - is just the beginning of his mission to reshape how politics, business, and culture can intersect digitally in the modern age.

For Americans nauseated at the decline of U.S. politics,
Bold Politics may be a refreshing change. Polanski is a solid interviewer, and unlike the U.S. president, focuses more on the issues and policies that affect voters than himself. It's a welcome change from the constant self-aggrandizement we are subjected to in the U.S.
