Blended families, far from being an exception, are more often the norm in the U.S. today. Approximately 17% of U.S. children (roughly 1 in 6) live in a blended family, defined as households with a stepparent, stepsibling, or half-sibling. Additionally, about 40% of married couples with children are in blended families, with 1,300 new stepfamilies formed daily. Over 100 million Americans are part of a steprelationship.
Then we have the myth of the evil stepmother, which is a pervasive cultural archetype spanning centuries, depicting stepmothers as cruel, jealous, and scheming, as seen in Cinderella and Snow White. This stereotype stems from old folk tales, historical high maternal mortality rates, and patriarchal narratives that pit women against each other, serving to demonize non-biological mothers.
Into this boiling pot of familial mayhem, a podcast launched in October 2025 called StepStories podcast, which has a very interesting perspective for how we celebrate our moms - namely stepmoms.
Creator/host Robin Breuner explores the realities of blended families, including communication challenges, identity, co-parenting, and building healthy relationships in non-traditional family structures. She’s especially strong in conversations around navigating complexity with empathy, something that resonates deeply with audiences who are parenting, partnering, or healing within family systems.
When we think of Mother’s Day, we often picture our birth mothers,
but what about the millions of blended families redefining what motherhood looks like today? In a special Mother’s Day edition of StepStories: Thriving and Surviving Life in Blended
Families, the host invited listeners to explore a question that often goes unasked: How do we celebrate stepmothers? Through honest, story-driven conversations, StepStories examines the evolving relationships
between stepmothers and stepchildren; whether it’s a bonus daughter learning to build trust, a stepmother navigating her role, or families finding connection across complex dynamics.
The episode also explores how these relationships shift over time, from the challenges of adolescence to the perspectives that come with adulthood.
StepStories offers a deeply human look into the realities of blended family life.
Drawing from her own experience as both a stepdaughter and a parent in a blended family, Breuner brings empathy, nuance, and authenticity to conversations around communication, conflict, healing,
and connection.
Robin Breuner is an author, freelance journalist, and podcast host based in Marin County, California. A former bookseller and author host at Book Passage, she has engaged with some of today’s most influential literary voices. Her writing has been featured in regional publications, and her debut memoir is forthcoming. Robin brings both personal experience and a writer’s perspective to her work, creating thoughtful, nuanced conversations about family and identity.
In one of my favorite episodes, host Robin Breuner welcomed Shay Stubblefield, a self-employed barber
with a unique background to discuss his experiences with blended
families, personal growth, and new ventures.
Shay shared insights about
his unconventional journey through various careers, his deep connection
to art and poetry, and his reflections on being raised in a diverse
family. He opened up about coping with his father's addiction, the impact
of his mother and other supportive figures in his life, and his
evolving role as a partner to his new girlfriend and her 6-year-old son.
Together, they explored the challenges and rewards of becoming a part of
a blended family.
Breuner is a solid interviewer, who is patient enough to draw out the stories her guests wish to share. Her episodes average about 45 minutes, and are focused and emotionally honest, instead of discursive and manipulative as some podcasts about family relationships tend to be.
Since blended families are so common in our society, people can learn a lot from checking out StepStories: Thriving and Surviving Life in Blended Families podcast.
Through candid conversations with stepmothers, stepfathers, stepchildren, and siblings, the show explores the joys, challenges, and emotional complexities of blended family life. Each episode offers listeners a space for honesty, healing, and connection.
