The Necessary Conversation Podcast: Family Therapy Through Politics

In today's U.S. world, families tend to adopt the mantra, "Don't talk about politics." This strategy is designed to keep peace within the family due to the wildly divergent political views espoused, especially on fringe-y, extremist websites, YouTube shows, and news networks.

The Necessary Conversation podcast has a totally different tactic. This podcast was created in August 2022 by Chad Kultgen in response to the growing trend of families going "no-contact" due to political differences.

The Necessary Conversation podcast is a weekly show where host Chad Kultgen and his sister Haley Popp (left-leaning millennials in California) discuss politics with their staunch MAGA-supporting parents, Mary Lou and Bob, in Oklahoma. It acts as "family therapy through politics" to bridge the deep political divide, often featuring tense debates, heated arguments, and attempts to understand opposing viewpoints.

The podcast aims to bridge the ideological gap and foster communication, preventing the complete severing of relationships over politics. On the show,Chad Kultgen (comedian/author) and his sister Haley talk with their parents, Mary Lou and Bob Kultgen. The parents are typical Fox News 24/7 viewers, searching for confirmation of their views, not information that would disrupt their insular worldview.

The discussions often center on current events, such as the 2024–2025 geopolitical conflicts, U.S. domestic politics, and social issues, showcasing how differently supporters of opposing sides consume information.

It is highly raw, with the parents sometimes yelling over the children, resulting in an unfiltered glimpse into a divided American family, according to the VALLEY Magazine article.

One example of the episodes is a midweek edition of The Necessary Conversation, whereby Chad and Mary Lou examine clips from the Clintons' recent testimony before Congress regarding the Epstein Files. In another episode, the siblings are joined by Virginia House Delegate Jessica Anderson, who flipped the 71st District in 2025 by defeating Republican incumbent Amanda Batten and turning the seat blue.

In another episode, the show breaks down one of the most alarming news cycles yet—Trump posting racist imagery of the Obamas, the DOJ quietly deleting Epstein files that mention Trump, open calls to nationalize elections, and mounting evidence of authoritarian consolidation.

The family has also discussed the Super Bowl halftime, Olympic boos, billionaire media takeovers, and whether Trump has ever read the Bible. (That's a big fat NO.)
