The Middle Mix is an audio and video podcast launched in March. The show features conversations tailored specifically for middle-aged people, affectionately referred to as “Middies.”

The show focuses on life, relationships, and careers from the perspective of Gen X and Xennials (those born around the late 70s and early 80s). It offers a relatable space to explore topics like midlife divorce, overcoming the fear of judgment, and nostalgic pop culture.

Britney tells her audience: “The 90s are most definitely making a comeback, and the Middies are here for it. Get ready to reminisce and laugh during this episode.”

Britney is also the founder of Small Biz Social Society, a membership platform that helps ambitious entrepreneurs make their mark on social media.

We caught up with Britney at the Houston Illuminate Creators Conference, which she and podcaster/podcast producer Freddy Cruz co-hosted in early October.

Q. Why and how did you start the podcast?

A. I started The Middle Mix after the content I was sharing on social media for people in my age range started blowing up. It became clear to me that there’s a community of people out there born between about 1965 and 1988 who are unique and have a lot to say. People in the middle of life right now in 2026 grew up without the technology we have today, but had to adapt to it as grownups. We’ve seen both worlds and can connect with others in person and online. Also, the 80s and 90s are making a major comeback in the zeitgeist. We grew up during such a cool time and love to talk about it.

Q. What are the key themes of your podcast?

A. The conversations we’re having in The Middle Mix are real, raw, and fun. It’s a chance for me to provide a space for Middies (Middle Mix audience members) to connect on how we’re hard-working, successful people who enjoy the finer things in life, but are also a little rough around the edges and not afraid of a good f-bomb. So far, anything from my own fond memories of smoking cigarettes to conversations with pop culture stars from the 80s has been hugely popular with the audience.

Q. What is your primary challenge as an independent podcaster?

A. My primary challenge as an independent podcaster is the fact that it’s not my full-time job at this time; therefore, I’m still responsible for running my company, Fun Love Media. It definitely adds a lot more work to my plate, but thankfully I’m not afraid of work, and I am willing to do what it takes.

Q. How has your podcast affected your non-podcast life?

A. The Middle Mix has brought so much joy and fulfillment to the rest of my life. It enhances the work we do at Fun Love Media because my team helps support the show. And it’s helped me build an even deeper relationship with the Middies in my social media audience. It’s really special.

Q. Of all the facets of podcasting — writing, recording, hosting, editing, marketing, distribution — what are the most challenging for you?

A. For me, finding time to squeeze in podcast work is what ends up being the most challenging. I’m juggling a lot between my company and raising my children. So sometimes I have to get creative to get everything done on time and with high quality.

Q. How are you building your audience into a community?

A. Naming the audience members “Middies” was the first step in taking that community to the next level. It’s a fun twist on saying “middle-aged people” that’s easy to say and helps everyone feel like they belong. So, what’s a Middie, besides someone who is a Middle Mix audience member? A Middie is a middle-aged individual who’s both boujee and a little rough around the edges, has zero Fs left, and takes the motto “work hard, play hard” very seriously.

Q. What does the future hold for you?

A. To quote an 80s jam, “the future’s so bright I gotta wear shades.” I’m so excited to grow The Middle Mix brand over the coming years with better and better content, fun merch, and live touring shows. Middies finally have a place to call home, and we love a good house party.

Note From Frank / Ear Worthy: I met Britney Alston at the Illuminate Creator Experience in Houston. Partnering with podcast pro and all-around gentleman, Freddy Cruz, Britney transformed Illuminate from concept to an experience in which creators — from singers, actors, AI experts, book publishing pros, social media influencers — collaborated on an event that spread ideas, solutions, camaraderie, collaboration, and reinforcement to speakers and attendees alike. Britney exuded energy, exuberance, excitement, and a passion for excellence.
